At our addiction treatment center in Mashpee, Massachusetts; our clients begin to sustain healthy nutrition habits through our program. In recovery from substance use disorder, wellness plays a crucial role in achieving overall well-being. Wellness can be defined as good health in various aspects of life such as physical, emotional, mental, social, and intellectual . The Eight Dimensions of Wellness, including social wellness, can help those in recovery build new, meaningful relationships with others who live a substance-free lifestyle and repair damaged family relationships. Emotional wellness is also essential in recovery, as it allows individuals to better anticipate and modify their reactions to triggers, warning signs, and harmful thought processes. The National Institute on Drug Abuse further emphasizes that even people with severe and chronic substance use disorders can overcome their illness and regain health and social function through remission, where those positive changes and values become part of a voluntarily adopted lifestyle.

Physical wellness is an important aspect of substance use disorder recovery. Incorporating physical activity, nutrition, and exercise into treatment has shown positive results and recovery benefits. Regular exercise and a healthy diet can improve overall health and aid in managing symptoms such as restlessness, sleeplessness, depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions that can occur when first stopping substance use. Fortunately, physical wellness does not have to be costly and can serve as a great help to individuals trying to recover from drug addiction.
