What Is Dual Diagnosis Treatment?

A dual diagnosis (also called co-occurring disorders) means you’re living with both a mental health condition and a substance use disorder—for example, anxiety and alcohol use, depression and opioids, or PTSD and stimulants.

At Foundations Group Recovery Centers, dual diagnosis isn’t an add-on—it’s built into the way we treat substance use. Our programs are designed to address:

  • The mental health symptoms that make sobriety hard (like anxiety, depression, PTSD, or bipolar disorder)
  • The substance use patterns that keep your mental health unstable
  • The underlying trauma, stress, and life changes that connect the two

Instead of getting help for “addiction” in one place and “mental health” in another, you work with one care team and one integrated plan.

Not sure if you have a dual diagnosis? Talk with our team about your symptoms and we’ll help you sort it out.

Who Our Dual Diagnosis Program Is For

You might benefit from dual diagnosis treatment at Foundations Group Recovery Centers if:

  • You use alcohol or drugs to manage anxiety, panic, or constant worrying
  • Depression, emptiness, or burnout keep pulling you back into use
  • You’re living with PTSD or trauma, and substance use has become a way to cope
  • You’ve been told you may have bipolar disorder, ADHD, or another condition that hasn’t been fully treated
  • You’ve tried treatment before, but relapsed when your mental health wasn’t addressed
  • You live on or near Cape Cod, Falmouth, Hyannis, Sandwich, or Barnstable County and want care close to home.

Even if you’re not sure what your diagnosis is, we can help you figure out what’s going on—and what kind of support you need.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment Options at Foundations

At our Mashpee, MA center, we offer multiple levels of care so you can get the right amount of support at the right time

Day Treatment (PHP-Level Care)

Most intensive daytime support without 24/7 inpatient stay.

  • Full-day programming several days per week
  • Individual and group therapy focused on both mental health and addiction
  • Psychiatric and medication management for co-occurring disorders
  • Ideal step-down after detox or residential, or step-up if outpatient isn’t enough

Half-Day Treatment (IOP-Level Support)

Half-day structured care—Massachusetts’ version of IOP.

  • Several hours of treatment, multiple days per week
  • Therapy, skills-building, and relapse prevention with room for work, school, or family
  • Great for people who need more than weekly therapy but not full-day treatment

Outpatient Treatment

Ongoing therapy and support while you rebuild daily life.

  • Regular individual and group sessions focused on mental health and addiction
  • Continued medication management and relapse-prevention planning
  • Ideal as a step-down from day or half-day treatment, or for milder symptoms

Virtual Day & Half-Day Programs

Dual diagnosis treatment from home, for Massachusetts residents.

  • Structured virtual day and half-day programs that mirror in-person care
  • Access to therapy, groups, and psychiatric support via secure telehealth

Helpful if transportation, health, or distance make in-person treatment difficult.

See which level of care fits your situation – Our team can help match you to day, half-day, outpatient, or virtual care.

What to Expect in Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Your treatment plan is tailored to you, but may include:

  • Comprehensive evaluation of your mental health, substance use, and goals
  • Individual therapy using CBT, DBT, and trauma-informed approaches
  • Group therapy for skills, connection, and accountability
  • Psychiatric care & medication management for co-occurring disorders
  • Dual diagnosis support integrated into day, half-day, and outpatient programming (not siloed off in a separate track)
  • Holistic therapies like mindfulness, somatic work, yoga, and creative therapies to help regulate your nervous system and stress response
  • Family support & education so loved ones understand both your mental health and addiction recovery needs
  • Aftercare planning and alumni support to keep you connected after formal treatment ends

We don’t just want you to stop using. We want you to sleep better, think clearer, feel steadier, and rebuild relationships—with support for both your brain and your sobriety.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment FAQ

Q1: Do I have to stop all mental health medications to enter treatment?

No. Many of our clients are already on medications for anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, or other conditions. Our psychiatric providers review what you’re taking and work with you to optimize—not automatically stop—your medications as part of your overall plan.

Relapse is common with co-occurring disorders, especially if mental health and addiction weren’t treated together. Our dual diagnosis approach is specifically designed to address what might have been missed before, with deeper focus on mood, trauma, and coping skills—not just abstinence

Length of stay depends on your needs and level of care. Some people are with us for a few weeks in Day or Half-Day Treatment before stepping down to Outpatient; others engage with our continuum of care longer. We’ll talk through a recommended timeline after your assessment, and adjust as you progress.

Our Mashpee location serves Barnstable County, Cape Cod, Falmouth, Hyannis, Sandwich, Plymouth, Martha’s Vineyard, and Boston-area clients, with both in-person and virtual options to reduce travel burden.
